World of Warcraft....what is all the hoopla and razzamatazz about? I tried it and found it to be an average MMORPG...nothing wrong with that, I just don't see why the player base is so enourmous....at least double the usual players I normally see in an MMO game. I found the community to be somewhat unpleasant....no offense....but that applies to many MMO games

I really just want to know is more popular than most MMO games....did I miss something?

I play it, and have played it since it came out, and I still don't know why exactly. For all the bitching and complaining I see they still manage to have millions of people playing. "My server sucks" "The lag sucks" "Blizzard hates casual players" "Blizzard hates raiders" "Nerf such and such a class" Those complaints happen daily, and yet they keep playing. And the community isn't all that bad, you were either A) reading the forums (bad idea, all the idiots hang out there, occasionally there are good posts but most aren't, small fraction of the WoW population), or B) You were in The Barrens, in which case well... thats just The Barrens. You get used to The Barrens.

Anyway, there is more than double the normal player base in any other MMO, there are 6 Million people playing WoW world wide, 6 million, according to some article I read thats 1 out of every 2 MMORPG players.

I can't really tell you what you are missing, because I'm not completely sure myself, but I think it has something to do with how easy it is to pick up WoW and play it. It is fairly straight forward, nothing too complex that you can't pick up through the normal playing of your character.

People do seem to turn away from overly complex games don't they....but WWII has a massive learning curve and people still play it.

I still want to see the the other MMO genres grow. MMORTS games get no attention these days, very few MMOFPS games are running, MOOR is a recently thought-of category.....yet all I see are MMORPGs

Games in general turn people away, my dad isn't that big of a gamer, he plays maybe 5 games, and World of Warcraft is one of them, the easyness of it appeals to gamers that aren't really hardcore, and also to people who don't have time to spend 4+ hours at the computer running Molten Core or Blackwing Lair, they can sit down and play WoW anyway, go in the battlegrounds for some pvp, play an alt, do some quests with a friend they have been meaning to finish up and that can be done in a half an hour.

If games turn "people" away...I refuse to accept myself as a person

If you say the easyness of WoW is appealing, how does the "Blizzard hates casual players" statement apply?

To get an idea of World of Warcraft's market share, look at this Subscription Chart for June 2006 from www.mmogchart.com . They have many charts outlining the current and past MMO subscription landscape. While not entirely accurate due to things like missing data and different ways in which companies count subscribers, It should provide a general concept of just how many people play World of Warcraft, and how much it's dominating the other MMOs.

I don't currently play any subscription-based MMOs. I could subscribe to one sometime in the future, but It would probably have to provide deeper gameplay than just grinding for levels and camping enemy spawns. Exploration of a huge unique world with varied and interesting environments would be a major draw. Significant evolution of the game world over time might also be important.

I play WoW, and I can tell you I have no idea why I just walk half-way across Kalimdor or Azeroth for a quest, wasting 30 minutes of my time (went to every Alliance city south of Aerie Peak and north of Darkshire before reaching level 20). It's just.... appeasing somehow. The only reason that I can come up with is that I've played Warcraft 3 and want to see the places. WoW, is just.... simpler and not as kiddish (Runescape) or Japanese-ish (Final Fantasy); it's more of a Tolkien-style universe, but even then, more unique (who's heard of a peaceful Orc since before Warcraft 3?). It's just.... realistic (or rather, more realistic than many games).

Yeah... and Barrens talk.... those Horde people are really fanatical about killing Alliance people. I don't think I heard a single "For the Alliance!!!" ever since I started playing. I spent only a few minutes playing on the Horde as an Orc, and I can tell you that it's a lot different in the language alone.... and that was just in Durotar.... didn't spend much time in the Barrens.

Well there is a lot of "Blizzard hates casuals" because the WoW General forums are fill with the 3% of the game population that is between the ages of 15 and 20 that just have to have something to complain about (read: the immature losers hang out there).

As for the horde being fanatical, I don't see that on my server. The Barrens talk is mostly insults and stupid jokes, not "FOR THE HORDE! Slaughter the alliance!" its a big zone, a major quest hub for the horde players, and well... really kind of boring when your quest is at the lift at one end, and you are at the crossroads. So most people just hit autorun and talk.

That being said, the alliance do suck And all gnomes should be exterminated on sight. Oh, and peaceful Orcs have been mentioned since Warcraft 1, they just haven't been seen since Warcraft 3.
whoosh

Blizzard even tried to make an adventure game about a young orc. It was never released, because the lads at Blizzard decided the qualtiy of the game was too bad.

That would be Lord of the Clans, they made that into a book instead. Its about Thrall, he leads the Orcs now.

And all gnomes should be exterminated on sight.

I take that as an insult. Still... the Horde is a tad bit.... immature?

One theory about the origins about Barrens talk (besides a peculiar quest that makes you search all through the Barrens [the largest area by far] for a dead woman) is that most of the 13-15 year-olds, that haven't played another Warcraft game and don't know the backstory, think that slaughtering Humans and stomping on Gnomes is way cooler than fighting using a pathetic Gnome, boring human, the usual drunken dwarves and very dull Night Elves.

I'd bet most of the people who don't know the Warcraft backstory would choose the Blood Elves in the expansion because of the name ("Blood Elves? Nice! Now I can suck peoples' blood!!!!!11) and nobody would join the Draenei (who's heard of the Draenei outside Warcraft anyways?).

"Whaer is mankriks wife?????????"
That is asked daily, complete with spelling mistakes and overuse of question marks.

I don't like Gnomes, at all. It isn't that they are alliance and I play horde, its that they are just plain ugly. And the horde is less immature than the alliance. At the moment its alliance that is full of the Legolas clones and people who play Night Elf females because if they are going to play, they want to play looking at the ass of something hot. The alliance population is greater than the horde population by far, the three reasons for that are A) Night Elves are the only Elf, OMG LEGOLAS! B) Something hot to look at, the horde is ugly, and C) This is a fantasy game, but I'm picking humans because I'm a human and I want to be something that looks like me.

The Barrens chat isn't because people are immature, a lot of people in there aren't, its the size of the zone and just how boring it is running across, conversations happen, someone looks stupid, everyone else laughs.

Edit: I have also noticed that the alliance players tend to complain about things more than horde players do.

I haven't noticed any of that on my server.... the only thing that I notice Alliance players say are:

"You wanna join a group?"

and

"[Insert Item Here] for sale! [Insert Price Here] gold!"

On the elves.... yeah, I saw a few as-bare-as-can-be Night Elf females.... no idea why they do that though. It sort've wastes time.

I admit that the Gnomes are a bit ugly....
