It's not an irrational hate. It's a hate for inappropriate uses. For example: when you want to type something, many people are used to not looking at the keyboard, but they have to if they can't feel it (not that I know how the Vita handles it's typing functionality); if your hands are on the sides, where the buttons are, then you'll have a tough time switching to touching the screen and switching back; the main menu would work fine with buttons, so why force us to use the touch screen?

Things like that. It's not as bad as inappropriate uses of the wiimote (which outnumbered appropriate uses a million to one), but it's still frustrating.

Also, aforementioned fingerprints.

So you're actually saying that you'd rather the Vita had a keyboard, or handled typing the way the PSP did?

Don't get me wrong, I hate touch keyboards as much as the next guy, but the Vita with a keyboard would be clunky and annoying. A PSP style keyboard would let you look away, I suppose, but I must admit that the uses for this are limited. The Vita isn't designed for word processing...

Sure, I'd love for the Vita to have Swype, but it's not going to happen, and the typing is still natively faster than anything on the PS3 and PSP.

Fingerprints... Well, I'll give you that one. I've learned to love the touch menus well enough, but sometimes I'd like to have the option of buttons just for fingerprints.

At least the Vita brings tag-based categories for music organization, something the PSP didn't have at all. That alone makes music scrolling faster. Not to mention, the PSP's maximum scrolling speed was never as high as the PS3's, something that still hasn't been fixed by the homebrew community.
I like you and this is going to likely come across as petty, but I want to remind you that the latest version of the hold plugin, at least, increased the scrolling speed system-wide by 50%.

I do like the sound of the tag-based organization, as I've wanted to use the shuffle function for my 'sleep' tracks. I like listening to music while I slumber, yes.

Ultimately, what we dislike the vita for can be solved with enough homebrew. Though I'm not sure I can get around the size of the buttons...

I'm totally aware of the scrolling feature of the plugin, but despite this, it's still not quite as fast as the PS3, and definitely not as fast as the Vita, with its hold-scrolling feature.

Funny, I also listen to music while I sleep. But this is where my biggest issue with the Vita lies: the lack of an internet radio feature. I usually listen to the Sleepbot Environmental Broadcast every night, but since the Vita doesn't support internet radio, I'm forced to resort to using my phone again.

This is fine for home. But unfortunately, my school's insanely long WiFi password is apparently one character too many for my phone , and that last character won't fit into the text box. It's absolutely infuriating...

That's why I'm on such a lookout for homebrew. If I can just get a simple PSP homebrew like PSPRadio on my Vita, it would let me listen to live audio streams while I'm at school. There are plenty of other uses, of course.

Any comments on how the buttons feel? Tiny? Just the right size? How large, or small, are your hands?

To me, they felt a little small at first, but I quickly became accustomed to them. Their size makes them more reachable and suited to multiple presses, especially for fighting games.

They are "clicky", unlike the PSP's buttons, so the feel is much different.

Anyhow, I've got to say, Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 would never have worked on the PSP's D-Pad and buttons. It would have killed your fingers. The Vita's are much smaller, but the D-Pad is much easier to slide directions, and the buttons don't require quite as much force. I wouldn't go back, personally.

I'd say I have average-sized hands, but fairly thin fingers. Maybe I'm not the person to ask, though. I've heard conflicting reports from people with large hands. I'd suggest trying a store demo.

The store demos are in demo mode, or in my opinion, 'do not pay attention to the man behind the curtain' mode. I have fairly large hands and fingers, so it feels really easy to press all the directional buttons at once.

I'm not sure what you mean by "man behind the curtain" mode... I've never tried any of them myself, but they shouldn't be any different than the PSP demo units.

They just include several game demos to try out. What are you implying, that there's some form of illusion being used?

To me, being able to reach all the buttons easily is a plus, but I could see why someone with large hands might find it irritating.

I'm implying that they hid everything but the games. There's no demonstration of its ability to browse the internet, play music, videos, etc. Just games. Nothing else. It doesn't make sense to hide them unless they're all terrible, in which case I'd rather just stay with my PSP. Those 'extras' really make or break my decision with any kind of game console. My analogy referred not to the illusion aspect, but how they hid everything away that they did not want you to see.

However, it is nice to see good launch titles for the Vita. If it makes a strong showing, it should be a very strong contender for a long time. What would be nice is if it had the capacity to use Android applications. It certainly has the hardware to do so.

Well, I play fighting games. A random, erroneous input here or there ruins me. In other games, I can see how it'd never be a problem, or very rarely, so I am sure that I am a minority here.

Ah, I wasn't aware that they had blocked access to other features. From my own experience, all of the apps you mentioned are serviceable. None of them (browser aside) are especially bad, but they're all pretty barebones, feature-wise. Internet browser's slow and lacks support for any video streaming.

As for Android applications, it will never have native Android app support, but there is an interesting development in Sony's new PS Suite program. This is a sort of app market that Sony is developing for Android-based "Playstation-certified devices", and recently they've announced that PS Suite applications will also be compatible with the Vita. It's probably the most open thing Sony's ever done, post-OtherOS, and there should be a plethora of interesting apps published for the system, judging from the popularity of PSP homebrew. There's an open beta, if you're a developer. Afterwards, developers have to shell out 100$ a year for a contract.

As for your last point, you might be right. Where I find the clickiness and the size of the buttons to be perfect for fighting games, they might be your downfall. For me, Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny on the PSP numbed my fingertips to the point where I actually had to stop playing for a few days. Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, on the other hand, feels excellent on the Vita's buttons. It's very well suited for slides and multi-presses, in my opinion.

I would try some fast-paced, precise inputs used in fighting games on a demo unit, just to see how it feels. To most, the Vita's a great system for fighting games, and it already has a few good ones.

Anyhow, from what I've read on forums, many tall, large-handed Vita owners said they got used to the system after a while. I've yet to read an account from a Vita owner who returned the system because they didn't adapt to the buttons. I doubt you'd have any problems after a bit of time, but then, I'm not the guy with large hands, so I can't exactly give a first-hand account.

Ah, so the browser from the PSP to the Vita is a downgrade? I didn't go to my PSP nor would I go to a Vita for features, but rather agility. I liked the PSP's browser, because it was very easy to use and gave me a good degree of control over what it did.

How do the media players compare?

Yeah, Sony likes to capture ALL of the revenue streams. They're sort of like fish. The more you grab at them, the more they try to swim away.

I love Blazblue and I'm considering buying a Vita just for Continuum Shift Extend, when I get the money.

That pun was horrible

It appears we are the only PSP fanboys in the forum.
