daily UTC chat log for Anywherebb (Postline 6.1.30)
20:54, Cryoburner blames violent videogames.
21:00, Megagun blames lack of pie.
22:38, Fth> http://www.fredvanlente.com/cthulhutract/pages/index.html
22:44, Chad> How.... interesting...
23:17, Languidiir> 'Sup? Dead silence? Yeah, thought so.
23:39, Trad.a is actually pretty fly for a white guy.
23:47, Languidiir> okay.
03:14, Languidiir> Anyone alive?
03:16, Chad> Shh! You'll wake the dead.
03:21, Languidiir whispers: Is this better?
03:41, Languidiir> there are no guarantees. developers can leave their job and spend all their time on the sequel to Noctis. I hope I'm not the only one getting personal
03:42, Languidiir> All words taken from an old troll thread to make a sentence. Man, I really like Mozilla's new word-dragging feature.
03:42, Languidiir> Seriously though, is everyone just dead? No point on being on frespych without actually using it, eh?
03:42, Languidiir meant: of
03:49, Chad> FreSpych wasn't meant as a IRC type deal. Thats why we have a IRC channel. It was just for people to talk about random things whenever they felt like it.
03:52, Languidiir> I know, but IRC is hard. Have to download a client, then figure out the server, then connect to the right channel, all without documentation that I can find
04:01, Chad> I did have a online version, but it doesn't work with the server they use now.
04:06, Languidiir> Is there anywhere that directs me to the right server/channel?
04:06, Chad> Under the "Whatever" section there is a sticky on the top.
04:07, Chad> FYI: The IRC isn't very active either. :P
04:08, Languidiir> None of the forum is. It's dying.
04:08, Chad> Nah, its always like this...
04:09, Languidiir> I've been here for years, I know that. But it really is doing badly. We get a new post in the Noctis forum every other week at the best.
04:09, Languidiir> We have no real rock-solid evidence that Alex is still even actively working on NV.
04:11, Languidiir> It's easy to assume that he is, but where's the proof? He barely ever visits at all.
04:12, Chad> Ah well, he actually isn't working on it at the moment. He's working on getting the next version of Lino done first. Thus when thats done he'll continue with NV.
04:13, Languidiir> That's incredibly worrying. It'll be the next epoc before this thing is done. Some of us might not make it that far and still remember to check.
04:14, Chad> Its his project and he can do as he wishes. Even though we want to play it we'll have to wait. Can't do much more then that.
04:39, Skinnymon whispers: "round' and 'round she goes, and where she stops, nobody knows." ;\
05:01, Languidiir> Turns out I was completely wrong; Alex has been here as recently as April this year.
05:03, Tom> He's working on Lino 2.0 right now, which looks to be an amazing new iteration of the language. Not that I'll ever manage to learn it, unfortunately, but it should be fun to play with.
05:04, Languidiir> His voice is awesome
05:05, Languidiir> also, he has really old computers and still uses floppy disks apparently
05:07, Languidiir> hello cryoburner.
05:07, Tom> Hey, I use floppy disks. And how old is old? I regularly use a 400 MHz Pentium II.
05:08, Languidiir> That's old.
05:08, Languidiir> Any computer that has a built-in floppy drive is essentially outdated in this age.
05:09, Tom> hm, just out of curiosity, how old are you? I guess since I grew up using floppy drives every day, they still seem normal to me...
05:09, Languidiir> Don't get me wrong, though. I regularly use and repair really old computers like that, from an Apple IIe to some monolithic old IBM that boots 50% of the time.
05:10, Languidiir> I'm 14, so that probably explains it. Still, though, you have to admit that the way computers are now, floppy disks are old.
05:12, Tom> They beat CDs for transferring small files quickly, especially when you can't find your flash drive and the networking driver is wonky.
05:13, Tom> Plus in many cases you need them for BIOS updates...
05:14, Languidiir> My flash drive is constantly in my pocket. But, you're right, they load much faster than CDs. However, most modern computers don't even have a floppy drive, so they're ineffectual if your computer is newer.
05:16, Tom> Every computer that I've built has a floppy drive. There's really no excuse not to, IMO, since they're like $7 from newegg...
05:17, Cryoburner> Emm... Alex's computers aren't really old.
05:17, Tom> but I guess OEMs cranking out mass-produced beige boxes need to get price cuts somewhere.
05:19, Cryoburner> A floppy drive is pretty much required if you want to install Windows to a SATA drive, since you need it to install the SATA drivers first. : )
05:19, Tom meant: boxen :)
05:19, Tom> Indeed.
05:19, Cryoburner> BIOS updates can be done from within Windows on many recent motherboards. :)
05:21, Tom> That's good to know, I haven't had to do one in a while - but I run Linux anyway, and a BIOS update isn't something I'd trust WINE with. :)
05:21, Cryoburner whispers: Technically you can make a slipstream CD to install the drivers alongside Windows, but that's a lot more work.
05:21, Deanfrz> Good version of linux with which to start?
05:23, Cryoburner> I suppose it's also still worth keeping a floppy drive installed just in case you need to read a disk given to you by someone.
05:23, Languidiir> I use Ubuntu on the computers I fix.
05:23, Languidiir> Easier to work with, IMO.
05:24, Tom> Do you want to fiddle with everything and learn the internals, or have a working system with minimal hassle?
05:25, Tom> if the former, Gentoo. If the latter, Ubuntu. Or if it's for a server, Debian.
05:26, Cryoburner> Either way, half your hardware probably won't work. :P
05:26, Languidiir> By the way, I have a strange problem with Noctis
05:26, Languidiir> Whenever I try to exit, or sometimes just at random, the screen goes black and the computer freezes and is completely unresponsive.
05:27, Tom> of course, I somewhat prefer Kubuntu to Ubuntu...cryo, I haven't had any problems in quite a while - you may have to install non-free drivers or something, but it's generally painless.
05:28, Cryoburner> Is that With the Windows port of NICE, NICE, or Noctis?
05:28, Languidiir> Vanilla NIV.
05:29, Tom> this is odd, my connection seems to be dropping I think every time someone says anything, until I wait ten seconds or so and manually reload.
05:31, Languidiir> Me too.
05:33, Tom> And again...Well, that at least rules out the Ralink driver I'm using - the integrated (Ralink chipset) mobo wireless kept dropping, so I replaced it with a (also Ralink-based) USB stick.
05:34, Cryoburner> Same here. I think the server's acting up.
05:47, Languidiir> SO ANYWAYoh, cryo is gone. Can anyone help with this? NIV keeps freezing randomly and when I try to exit. The computer is completely unresponsive.
05:50, Tom> what OS?
05:51, Languidiir> XP.
05:52, Tom> it's probably a vagary of XP's compatibility issures - there are some truly inspiring hacks to deal with backwards compatibility in Windows.
05:56, Languidiir> It's never happened on my own computer, though. It runs XP too.
06:05, Tom> I don't know how to fix it. I would run it in DOSEMU, but that's Linux only, so I guess I'd boot into pure DOS. Not that that really helps, sorry.
06:05, Languidiir> Hmmm. I wonder if NICE would be any better.
06:27, Languidiir> Anyone know a really good roguelike?
06:28, Tom> er, nethack?
06:28, Languidiir> Well, yes, but any others?
06:29, Tom> I don't have any personal experience with others. I've heard Iter Vehemens ad Necem recommended, though.
06:30, Starchaser> I know of one. its in a book somewhere let me go check.
06:30, Languidiir> I have IVaN. Very fun, but probably the easiest to die in of any roguelike i've ever played
06:32, Starchaser> "Falcon's Eye" is its name.. oh wait thats just a Nethack mod... its alot prettyer tho. better graphicsand stuff.
06:33, Languidiir> Starchaser, why exactly do you swerve between good grammar and terrible misspellings? It seems to alternate.
06:35, Starchaser> I was trying to type quick. I keep forgetting that everyone on Freespych are very picky for such things.
06:41, Tom> You're probably thinking of me, but I don't care so much on Frespych, or any pseudo-realtime communication. In a forum post or article, on the other hand, why not take the time to get it right?
06:42, Tom> It's interesting, though - I heard someone say once: you'd correct someone who thought 2+2=5, but for some reason no one cares that "alot" and "alright" aren't real words...
06:43, Tom> (for example)
06:43, Languidiir> Some people say that the reason they don't spell correctly is because they're not in school, but that defeats the entire purpose of going to school int eh first place.
06:44, Languidiir meant: in the
06:45, Tom> and it also ignores the fact that (I know from experience) many people don't spell right in school either. :)
06:46, Languidiir> Many people's mistakes are just ridiculous, though. How do you let yourself get away with typing something like 'scholl' or 'sutrctures'?
06:47, Tom> it could be that they're just poor typists who don't feel like taking the time to fix mistakes. For example, I just typed "that" as "taht" and "just" as "jsut."
06:48, Languidiir> Yes, but some people do it on PAPER, as well, which just seems silly. How does that happen? Writing letters takes time, so you have to be either dyslexic or incredibly lazy and uncoordinated.
06:49, Cryoburner> lol that is awsmoe i< foing to get some snakcs to aawt!
06:49, Tom> you're going to do WHAT to snakes?
06:49, Languidiir> some snakes?
06:49, Languidiir> to aawt? Audit?
06:50, Cryoburner> SDat them!!
06:50, Tom> (I think he meant snacks to eat, but I have a genetic predisposition to figuring out these things because both my parents are elementary/middle school teachers.)
06:51, Cryoburner> YToud hys t sibt know how to reasdddd!!
06:51, Languidiir> I knew what he meant. It's just... atrocious.
06:52, Cryoburner whispers: So maybe I want to audit snakes. Is that so bad?
06:52, Cryoburner whispers: :P
06:52, Tom> Dave Barry would say, those are consenting snakes.
07:00, Languidiir> http://anywherebb.com/postline/cd/pngs/iiQgECNf3VMf7eRhfNcgqukiUM7i.png
07:04, Cryoburner> Heh... nice. The server seems to be having some issues at the moment, so I'll be off for a bit. :)
07:06, Starchaser> I wonder if alex is going to put someform of Online Chat and/or instant guide into NV
07:09, Languidiir> It would be nice.
07:13, Tom> Bad Idea: http://anywherebb.com/postline/cd/pngs/HWDg9lRg8mWeTLJeMd74.png
07:15, Starchaser> its just after fiddling around with HacIrc2 mod for NICE I started to wonder if there was going to be any instant or online features for NV
07:17, Languidiir> lol @ good idea, bad idea reference
07:24, Languidiir> They need to continue that Populate-A-Galaxy game, but for some reason I get the feeling that Tacogeddon is purposely avoiding me
08:13, Magnulus> And why is that?
08:19, Languidiir> No idea.
08:24, Magnulus> If you have no idea why he's avoiding you, he probably isn't.
08:26, Languidiir> He never replies to constant IMs these days, and when he was on frespych the other day, as soon as I said something he left.
08:47, Magnulus> if constantly sent ME IMs, I would probably be quite annoyed. As for leaving as soon as you said something, that is most likely a coincidence. People come and go ALL the time.
08:47, Magnulus> So stop being paranoid and stop sending him constant IMs.
08:48, Languidiir> They're not really constant, I can just never seem to get his attention.
08:51, Magnulus> You're probably trying too hard. Just let it go.
08:51, Languidiir> Man, I wish I could play Noctis, but it's acting up.
09:13, Starchaser> what happens?
09:15, Languidiir> It freezes every time I try to close it, and sometimes at random.
09:15, Starchaser> oh dear
09:28, Starchaser> YLASTRAVENYA
09:30, Languidiir> What about it?
09:36, Starchaser> I had a look inside the suricrasian cube
09:36, Starchaser> it's got a huge pillar going from the small dome on top to the ground
09:42, Languidiir> Inside of it?
09:42, Languidiir> It's hollow?
09:43, Starchaser> yea. a glitch that when I run into it at full speed I can see through the wall. its got the pillar and the rest is hollow
09:46, Starchaser> http://anywherebb.com/postline/cd/pngs/rc6eYozfaPWesQC31TC31TC3k.png
09:49, Languidiir> that's insanely pretty.
10:00, Languidiir> what is it, quartz?
10:01, Languidiir> oh, he's not even here. Hey, Serpens.
10:06, Languidiir> Hey, googlebot.
10:13, Starchaser> sorry I'm getting my hair dyed. no its not quartz its some form of solid matter.
10:13, Languidiir> googlebot
10:13, Languidiir> WHOA where did you come from
10:14, Languidiir> You're getting your hair dyed and on the computer at the same time?
10:14, Starchaser> well i like to think my mother... but I could be an alien or a very complex android
10:14, Starchaser> intermission
10:14, Languidiir> What color?
10:15, Languidiir> You know what would make a good story? An android kills Robin Williams and then uses his skin to cure cancer.
10:16, Starchaser> pink and purple :D. very manly ;)
10:16, Languidiir> Interesting fashion statement.
10:20, Languidiir> You play NIV or NICE?
10:27, Starchaser> who me?
10:33, Starchaser> Woah. I just traveled over 2500 lightyears and used up half my lithium tank on Noctis
10:35, Languidiir> yes you.
10:35, Starchaser> I play both. hmmmmm I seem to have lost a star
10:43, Languidiir> Lost one?
10:45, Starchaser> yes i did a ST jump and it said it couldn't find it.
10:45, Starchaser> and I don't know how to do a parsis jump
10:47, Languidiir> PAR [star name] to get the parsis, I believe
10:50, Starchaser> yes I have the parsis but I can't use them to jump because I don't know how.
10:50, Languidiir> mmmm
10:52, Languidiir> from the manual
10:52, Languidiir> Select the "Set Target To Parsis" from the Galactic Cartography menu. Now, type in the X, Y and Z coordinates you wish to jump to within the galaxy, each separated by the ENTER key. Once you have finished, your HUD will tell you that your remote target has been set to direct parsis coordinates. If y
11:13, Starchaser> found her. thanks
11:14, Languidiir> Which planet was it?
11:14, Languidiir> er, star?
11:18, Starchaser> northern waypoint
11:19, Languidiir> It's sad that the GUIDE came to a screeching halt. That was a really big part of NIV.
11:20, Starchaser> It is very sad. but the new version should bring with it a whole bunch of new entries and stars to name
11:20, Languidiir> I found a really great felysian planet
11:21, Languidiir> previously undiscovered, with rolling green plains that looked like well-tamed lawns
11:21, Languidiir> beautiful clean-looking water and a phenomenal view of the sun from the polar tundra
11:22, Languidiir> I named it Jubilance
11:22, Languidiir> it's like suburbia meets utopia
11:27, Languidiir> I took a screenshot of its parsis coordinates. if anyone's interested the planet is at 979849:4529861:2675840
12:13, N5corp> The dark void of eternity; the distant stars blinking at me in their own confused, if resolute, way. Damn gotta start playing noctis again. Such wonderful loneliness.
12:17, Languidiir> Nice way to put it.
12:22, Languidiir> Everyone go check out the very first frespych log. Back when Alex was still here and Raptorjedi was a n00b.
12:28, Starchaser> RJ wasn't a noob when this site was made. there were a few before this one.
12:29, Languidiir> I meant in the sense that he had a very low standard for grammar and spelling
12:36, Trad.a> your a grammer nazi!
12:36, Trad.a goes to bed. And by bed he means MoO1.
12:36, Languidiir> You mean, "You're a Grammar Nazi!"
13:02, Languidiir> 'Night, Starchaser.
